Zero Smuggling: Seme and Benin Customs Unveil One-Stop Border Post Assessment
By: James Shodiya
The era of unchecked smuggling activities along the Nigeria-Benin border corridor is set to become a thing of the past, as the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and Benin Customs Service on Thursday jointly introduced a One-Stop Border Post (OSBP) assessment system aimed at curbing illegal trade and facilitating legitimate cross-border commerce.
The initiative is designed to strengthen collaboration between the two customs administrations, streamline border procedures, and enhance the monitoring of goods and persons moving through the Seme-Krake border corridor.
The joint assessment system is expected to improve information sharing, reduce duplication of customs processes, and strengthen efforts to prevent smuggling and other forms of illicit cross-border trade.
Officials of both customs services reaffirmed their commitment to greater cooperation, noting that the initiative would promote lawful trade while ensuring effective enforcement of customs regulations.
According to the Controller General of Nigeria Customs Service, Wale Adeniyi, the development marks another step towards achieving a more coordinated, transparent, and efficient border management system between Nigeria and Benin.
” For the very first time Customs is taking the initiative to let Africa know that is important and Customs is very important to trade and now we are demonstrating trust and confidence just as traders trust themselves in trade transactions.
The Joint Border Post Assessment Post we are launching today is the first step of confidence and trust the two countries is taking as a manifestation of that trust” Adeniyi Stressed
The CGC, however, said that the system will not automatically solve all border related issues but will rather create a foundation that will integrate and harmonize trade along the border corridor
